Sapa is about 5.5 hours from Hanoi on the expressway. Trekking the Muong Hoa valley is the best way to see the rice terraces and villages.
Best season
- September to early October: golden rice.
- May–June: water season, terraces like mirrors.
- December–January: cold, sometimes frost on Fansipan.
The Lao Chai – Ta Van trail
About 12 km, mostly dirt paths through the fields with a few steep sections. Anyone in normal health can do it; no climbing experience needed.
Is Fansipan worth it?
The cable car takes you near the 3,143 m summit in about 15 minutes. Go in the morning, when there are fewer clouds.
