Ninh Binh, "Ha Long Bay on land", is about 2 hours from Hanoi. The Trang An Landscape Complex is a UNESCO mixed World Heritage Site.

Trang An or Tam Coc?

Trang An: a 2–3 hour boat ride through many caves and temples, wilder scenery.
Tam Coc: about 1.5 hours, best when the rice turns gold (late May to early June).

About 500 stone steps. Go early in the morning or late in the afternoon, bring water and shoes with good grip.
